Crown — Terms of Service
Effective October 23, 2026
- What do these Terms govern?
- This document records the arrangement between the individual developer who runs Crown (the “Proprietor”) and each person who uses it (a “Patron”). Crown is a voice app for recording short spoken takes about the things one enjoys and listening to the takes of others; between mutual followers, it also carries messages and video calls.
- When do they begin to bind a Patron?
- By installing, opening, or using Crown in any way, the Patron agrees to everything written here. A person who does not agree should stop using Crown.
AReach of These Terms
The Patron accepts that every guideline, rule, or notice the Proprietor posts for Crown, whatever its title, forms part of these Terms. Where such a posted rule and these Terms say different things on the same point, the Patron agrees that the posted rule prevails on that point, unless it says otherwise.
BGlossary
The Patron and the Proprietor agree that, throughout these Terms, the following words carry these meanings:
- “Service” means the Crown app together with every feature, piece of content, and form of support the Proprietor provides through it.
- “Patron” means anyone who uses the Service, whether signed in or not.
- “Points” means Crown Points: units usable only inside the Service to unlock features the Proprietor specifies, such as card themes. Points are a right of use confined to the Service. They are not money, and they cannot be turned into cash or into value of any other kind, nor refunded.
- “Content” means voice recordings, text, images, ratings, and any other material a Patron records, writes, sends, or posts through the Service.
CConduct the Proprietor Refuses
The Patron undertakes not to do any of the following while using the Service:
- break any law, or act against public order or accepted morals;
- commit, help with, or prepare for a crime;
- infringe copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property, or the portrait rights, privacy, reputation, or other rights and interests of the Proprietor, other Patrons, or anyone else;
- put an excessive load on the networks, servers, or systems connected with the Service;
- disrupt or obstruct the running of the Service;
- get into the Service, or attempt to, by unauthorized means;
- gather, store, or use information about other Patrons without their permission;
- use the Service for an unlawful or dishonest purpose;
- cause other Patrons or third parties loss, harm, or distress, or make a nuisance of oneself toward them;
- pose as another person or organization;
- advertise, promote, solicit, or sell anything without the Proprietor’s permission;
- use the Service to seek out and meet strangers of the opposite sex;
- hand any benefit, directly or indirectly, to antisocial forces such as organized crime groups;
- send or post material that is obscene, that is child pornography, or that depicts the abuse of children;
- obtain Points by improper means;
- do anything else the Proprietor judges inappropriate.
DTakes and Other Content
Content stays the property of the Patron who made it. The Patron grants the Proprietor a free, non-exclusive permission to store, copy, and present that Content within the Service, to the extent the Proprietor needs in order to run and improve the Service. The Patron warrants that they hold every right required to post their Content.
The Patron agrees that a take or any other Content meant for other Patrons passes a review before it plays for them, and that the Proprietor may hold back, hide, or take down Content that breaches these Terms, without notice. The Proprietor tolerates neither objectionable Content nor abusive behavior toward other Patrons. Patrons can report Content and accounts, and block accounts, from inside the app; the Proprietor reads reports and acts on them.
EJoining Crown
A person who wants an account applies in the way the Proprietor specifies, and the account comes into being once the Proprietor accepts the application. Registration is open only to people aged 18 or over, and by applying, a person vouches for having reached that age.
The Proprietor reserves the right to turn down an application, and need not say why, in cases including these:
- the application contains information that is false, mistaken, or missing;
- the applicant has breached these Terms in the past;
- the applicant has not yet turned 18;
- the applicant belongs to, or has dealings with, an antisocial force;
- the Proprietor otherwise judges the registration unsuitable.
FKeeping Sign-In Details Private
The Patron agrees to look after their email address and password at their own responsibility, and never to pass them to, lend them to, reveal them to, or share them with anyone else. The Patron accepts that a sign-in made with details matching a registered account may be treated as use by the holder of that account. The Proprietor bears no liability for harm caused by someone else using a Patron’s details, except where the Proprietor acted intentionally or with gross negligence.
GCrown Points
The Patron acknowledges that Points can be acquired through a purchase or by satisfying conditions the Proprietor sets, and that the Proprietor may also hand out Points at no charge.
The Patron agrees that Points cannot be refunded, exchanged, or cashed, except where the law demands it or the Proprietor expressly allows it. Once 180 days have gone by since the Patron last signed in, every Point in the account lapses and the Patron loses the whole balance.
The Patron undertakes not to come by Points through any of the following:
- fraud or deception;
- a means of payment that is unauthorized or improper;
- taking advantage of a defect, bug, or error;
- any other improper method.
Where the Proprietor finds such conduct, the Proprietor reserves the right to cancel the Points involved, limit what the Patron can do in the Service, or remove the registration. When a Patron leaves Crown or the registration is removed, all Points held at that moment lapse, and no compensation is paid for them.
HLimiting a Patron’s Access
The Proprietor reserves the right, without advance notice, to limit a Patron to some features or shut the Patron out of the Service entirely, cancel the Patron’s Points, or remove the registration, where:
- the Patron breaches these Terms;
- registration details prove to be untrue;
- a means of payment the Patron uses is suspended;
- the Patron leaves fees or any other debt unpaid;
- the Proprietor is unable to reach the Patron for a certain period;
- the account goes unused for a certain period;
- the Proprietor otherwise considers it unsuitable for the Patron to keep using the Service.
The Patron agrees that the Proprietor bears no liability for harm these measures cause.
IStepping Away From Crown
The Patron may leave Crown at any time through the procedure the Proprietor provides, which is the Delete account option in the app. On leaving, any debt the Patron owes the Proprietor falls due at once, and the Patron agrees to settle it immediately. Points held at that moment lapse and are not refunded. Information about the Patron after departure is handled under Section M and the Crown Privacy Policy; unless a legal duty requires it to be kept, the Proprietor may delete it after a set period.
JWhen Crown Goes Quiet
The Proprietor reserves the right to pause or break off the Service, in whole or in some features, without advance notice, where:
- the systems behind the Service need maintenance, inspection, repair, or updating;
- an earthquake, flood, fire, power cut, or other event beyond anyone’s control makes the Service hard to provide;
- computers, communication lines, or similar equipment stop because of an accident;
- the Proprietor otherwise judges the Service difficult to provide.
The Patron agrees that the Proprietor bears no liability to the Patron or to any third party for harm that follows, except where the Proprietor acted intentionally or with gross negligence.
KAltering the Service
After giving notice in advance, the Proprietor reserves the right to change, add to, suspend, or end what the Service offers. The Patron agrees that the Proprietor is not liable for harm that results.
LWhat Is Not Promised, and Where Liability Stops
The Patron acknowledges that the Proprietor gives no promise, express or implied, that the Service has no defects in fact or in law, whether of safety, reliability, accuracy, completeness, effectiveness, suitability for any given purpose, or security, nor that it is clear of errors and bugs or that it leaves everyone’s rights untouched.
The Proprietor bears no liability for harm the Patron suffers through the Service, unless the harm stems from the Proprietor’s intent or gross negligence.
If the contract linking the Proprietor and a Patron counts as a consumer contract under Japan’s Consumer Contract Act, the paragraph above does not apply. Even then, the Proprietor is not liable for harm arising from special circumstances, and liability for harm caused by the Proprietor’s negligence, other than gross negligence, is capped at the usage fees the Proprietor received from that Patron in the calendar month in which the harm occurred.
The Patron agrees that the Proprietor has no responsibility for any dealings, communications, or disputes between the Patron and other Patrons or third parties.
MPersonal Data
The Proprietor undertakes to treat any personal information gathered via the Service with care, following the Crown Privacy Policy further down this page.
NUpdating These Terms
The Proprietor reserves the right to amend these Terms without seeking each Patron’s individual consent in either of these cases:
- the amendment serves the general interest of Patrons;
- the amendment does not conflict with what the agreement is for, and is reasonable in view of why it is needed, how fitting its content is, and the other circumstances surrounding it.
Before an amendment takes effect, the Proprietor will announce what is changing and the date from which the change applies.
OWhich Law, Which Court
These Terms are governed by Japanese law and are to be interpreted under it. The Patron and the Proprietor agree that any dispute about the Service goes, at first instance, exclusively to the court with jurisdiction over the place where the Proprietor is located.
PHow Notices Travel
The Patron agrees that notices and other communication between the Proprietor and the Patron follow the method the Proprietor specifies. Until the Patron reports a change in the specified way, the Proprietor may treat the registered contact details as current, and a notice sent to them counts as having reached the Patron at the moment it is sent.
QPosition Not Transferable
Without the Proprietor’s prior written consent, the Patron undertakes not to transfer, pass on, lend, pledge, or deal in any other way with their position under this agreement, or with any right or duty arising under these Terms, in favor of a third party.
